3 Simple Changes That Make Your Kitchen Greener
Reducing your impact on the environment often starts in the kitchen. The production of dairy and meat products creates so many carbon emissions and uses up so many resources so if you want to reduce the impact that you have on the planet, it’s the best place to start. But you should always be looking for more ways to live a greener lifestyle and the food that you cook in the kitchen is only the start. The way that you cook and buy it is just as important. Here’s how you can live a greener lifestyle in the kitchen.
Cut Down On Plastic
The amount of plastic in the oceans is one of the biggest environmental issues that we face right now and until non-recyclable plastics are banned completely, it’s up to consumers to do what we can to reduce the amount of plastic that we use. It’s actually a lot harder than you think because so many products come in plastic packets that can’t be recycled. There are, however, a few things that you can do to reduce the amount you use. Things like using bar soap instead of liquid soap to wash your hands and buying refillable washing up liquid. When it comes to food, it’s best to try to avoid the supermarkets. If you go to a fruit and veg shop or a market instead, you’ll get paper bags not plastic which really helps you to cut down, or better yet take your own reusable produce bags. Snack foods are another big problem because most of them come in non-recyclable plastic packaging. Make your own food and take it with you and you’ll use a lot less plastic.
The appliances that you have in your kitchen have a big impact on the amount of energy you’re using. If you are considering replacing an old appliance, look for the most environmentally friendly replacement, for example, an induction hob is a particularly good way to cut your energy usage. They only activate when you put a pan on them and switch off right after cooking, they’re also generally more efficient so you’ll be a lot greener and you’ll save some money while you’re at it.
Wash Up Properly
Dishwashers are actually a lot greener than washing up in the sink but only if you use them right. Always make sure you’ve got a full load in there before you run it, otherwise, you’re wasting energy. If you don’t have a dishwasher and you’re using the sink, you need to watch the amount of water that you use. Most people just fill it to the top every time but you need to ask yourself whether you really need to. Wait until you’ve got a decent amount of stuff to do before you fill the sink and only fill it up as much as you need to.
Make these simple changes around the kitchen and you can massively reduce the impact that you have on this planet.
