Elsa’s Ocean Deodorant Review

Are you thinking of switching to a natural deodorant? Perhaps you already have but the brand you’re using isn’t really working?  Read on to read my thoughts on Elsa’s Ocean Deodorant.

Why a natural deodorant?

Conventional antiperspirants contain ingredients that have suspected links to serious health problems, such as cancer and hormone disruption.  Aluminium, parabens and synthetic perfumes are the main offenders.  Not only that, but sweating is a natural function that many people no longer feel comfortable with stopping (traditional antiperspirants actually block your sweat ducts).   Many chemical antiperspirants are also not cruelty-free.

However, not all natural deodorants are created equal and many people are disheartened when they struggle to find a natural alternative that really works.

Elsa’s Organic Skin Foods

Elsa’s Organic Skin Foods came about from the search for an effective, natural, vegan and safe deodorant that is gentle enough for even children to use.  After 18 months of development and rigorous testing, Elsa’s deodorants were born!  The deodorants detoxify, nourish, deodorise and sooth using natural and organic ingredients.

Elsa’s deodorants never contain Aluminium, Parabens, Triclosan, Propylene Glycol, artificial colours, synthetic fragrances, or ingredients from animal sources.

They also offer FREE SAMPLES (yay!) which is a rare enough thing these days and makes it super easy to try their products before you buy.

My old deodorant

I have been using the same natural deodorant for about 10 years.  It works well enough for lazy days, but on an average day (running around after small children) as the day draws to a close I do find I start to whiff a bit.

Then there’s the super busy days, when I get too hot, when I actually start sweating a lot and then the deodorant fails completely.  First I get the tell-tail wet patches and then later on, the nasty niff.  It’s very embarrassing, and makes me want to stay away from people or if not possible, walk around with my arms clamped to my side, spraying on any available chemical-laiden perfume I can find.

As I haven’t been out much these last few years (mum life) I didn’t really worry about it too much.  But just recently, now that my children are a bit older, I’m going out to work more and seeing more of friends etc, and so feel the need for stronger protection.

I tried a different natural deodorant but still found I had to reapply often and the scent just sort of sat on top of the sweaty smell.  Nice.  So when I was sent Elsa’s Organic Skin Foods Ocean Deodorant to try I had high hopes.

Ocean Deoderant – the scent

Elsa’s Organic Skin Foods make four different deodorants and I chose the Ocean scent because:

  1. I’ve read a few reviews that said it worked the best out of the four and
  2. I love all things seaside – I live by the sea, my house is decorated in a nautical theme, my kids are decked out in beach themed togs, you get the picture.

Straight away I LOVE the scent.  That is very important to me.  All of my beauty products have to smell absolutely divine, or have no scent at all.  It’s all or nothing in that regard.  Perfection, or get out of my shopping basket.

This deodorant smells exactly like the ingredients on the label (peppermint and tea tree) and yet at the same time those scents combine to make me think of being outside at dawn on summer’s morning, with dew on the grass and a refreshing breeze in the air.

Reading the description on Elsa’s website I can see that they also say it is a ‘fresh, breezy’ scent, but I swear I thought the same before reading that, so I guess what I’m saying is that the ‘fresh, breezy’ scent has been verified independently!

They also say it ‘inspires a sense of peace’ which I can also definitely confirm (hence my dawn garden image). For anyone with two children under five, this can only be a good thing.

Does it work?

On me, yes it does!  Brilliantly.  I’ve been road testing it for about three weeks. On a normal day the protection lasts right through until bedtime – still smelling amazing with no dampness.

However, the true test came when we were first hit by the recent heat wave.  Having two children under five means I don’t tend to have the time/brain capacity to check things like weather reports or news on a daily basis so when the temperatures shot up I was completely unaware and left the house in a warm cardi, jeans, winter boots, all topped of nicely with a long jacket.

I was on a trip to the shops, walking with my two year old.  My son quickly decided he didn’t want to go to the shops or in fact walk at all, so I had to carry him kicking and screaming …… and the shopping …… and his discarded fleece all the way round town and home again.  I was sweating.  A lot.  I actually had beads of sweat running down my face by the end of it all.

But I was glad of it in one way so I could properly test the deodorant’s coping power in extreme conditions. I did the sniff test after the ordeal and could not smell a thing apart from the fresh breezy scent!  I got my face right in there to really double check and only then could I just about detect a tiny whiff of body odour underneath the scent of the deodorant but it was almost imperceptible and I don’t think anyone else will be getting that close to my armpits so we’re safe there.  In any case a quick reapplication sorted it all out.  That has been the only time I have had to reapply during the day.

Since then I’ve been happily wearing the deodorant for super-long work days, trips to London on public transport, and family days out and it has performed fabulously throughout.
